The women of punk rock

As with most sub-cultures, the mainstream media generally finds it pretty easy to almost completely ignore the contribution made by women and the women of the punk rock scene are no different.  In fact, because of the confrontational attitude and provocative aesthetics of the scene, punk women perhaps have a harder time than most.  Certainly when the original punk scene developed, with all its associated controversy and aggression, the very idea that a woman could be involved must have had even the more liberal-minded individuals questioning if this way really a suitable way for a lady to conduct herself…  Rock of any kind has always been seen, stereotypically, as the domain of males, with its anger, passion and downright bad behaviour, but if you take time to scratch the surface, it is clear that there are plenty of women who have made exceptional contributions to the genre as a whole.
