Formed in 1974 in New York, The Ramones are regarded by many as the first punk band. Like fellow punks, The Sex Pistols and The Clash, the band has been inaugurated into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and their name features of many ‘best band’ lists. Despite their popularity and status today, as well as touring for almost 22 years, they achieved only limited commercial success during their active years and were regarded largely as a cult band. They still have plenty to bitch about on their new disc White Crosses, which features frontman Tom Gabel’s angry-as-hell screeds against anti-abortion activists and deeply felt reflections on life as a teenage anarchist.
It’s impossible to write about how influential punk bands are/were without an element of objectivity clouding your viewpoint, but I make no apologies for that. Don’t get mad! It’s just an opinion and you’re allowed to disagree. See, there are probably a whole bunch of bands that I overlooked, but to me, these are the guys and girls who really made a difference.
Some of these bands are undeniably hugely influential on a global scale; musically, stylistically and often even sartorially. Some have had a huge impact in mainstream culture, whereas others remain firmly lodged in the conscious of the underground, barely nudging into the view of the average person . But all of the bands below have one thing in common – without them punk rock would be a very different place today. [Read more...]
